Splash into a Skin Safe Summer with Eucerin (and a Giveaway!!)

Nothing says summer more than beach and fun in the sun, but while you are enjoying the warmer months, you need to stay on top of protecting our skin. What to do With Unused Stuffed Animals and Outgrown Books?

My kids love stuffed animals and they have mountains of them, some more loved than others.  Every once in a while we go through their stash and see which ones can "move" downstairs.  This is always a tough process because all of a sudden each one is their favorite.  I thought maybe if we found somewhere to donate them, to other children, they would be more willing to let them go.  After doing some research I found some organizations that take gently used stuffies (as well as new of course) and books that maybe your kids have outgrown.  Keep in mind when visiting the sites listed below that each organization has some guidelines to follow when donating, such as size, condition, they ask for no battery compartments or animals that make noise or sing.  Most ask that there is no religious insignia or dates such as on commemorative stuffed animals.

Sexual Predators are a Mother's Worst Fear

I'm sure everyone has already heard that Sandusky was found guilty during his sex abuse trial, and if you have not heard, well then you heard it here first (sorry trying to insert some humor).  I have been hearing story after story about these predators, abusing and molesting children, and no one finding out until years later.  My biggest fear is that someone will hurt my child and I have told my kids over and over that if anything like that happens or is suggested to them that they need to let me of an adult they trust know immediately.  We even had a case in our hometown where a high school student sexually assaulted a child on the school bus.  Yet another reason my children do not ride the bus, high schoolers should not ride the same bus as elementary school kids.  This stuff makes me sick.  I have no idea how anyone can look at a child and be attracted to them in that way.  I am so paranoid everywhere I go.  The thing that is worst for me is public bathrooms, let me explain.  My son is at the age now that he wants to use the mens room rather than the ladies, and he knows the difference.  Once in a while I can still convince him but sometimes he is very persistant.  I have told him time and time again to make sure the stall door is shut and locked, to make sure he doesn't pull his pants all the way down when using the urinal....but he is 4, has a tiny attention span, and has no idea that if he is not careful he could get hurt.  He has walked out of a public bathroom in the past still pulling his undies up and everything showing, I about died.  How can I get this through to him without totally freaking him out?  I am now that creepy woman that stands halfway in the door of the men's bathroom so that I can at least hear what he is doing and that no one is bugging him.  I never had these issues with my daughter since we use the same restroom.  I have to give major props to businesses that have the "family bathroom", I hope they know how much stress they save me, and probably other moms (I hope I'm not alone on this)  Any ladies (or guys) out there have any advice on how to get my son to be more private and aware?  Please leave me a comment on what has worked for you.

My Daughter the Business Lady

A while back we made headbands during one of our Girl Scout meetings, they were super cute and the girls had so much fun making them.  After the meeting my daughter said that she would like to make more, so we went to the store and got some supplies.  After making a whole bunch of them, we thought, hey, why doesn't she sell these?  That is how Lexi's Hair Flair was born. 

I have to admit that I have helped her, mostly in the bow making area, but the creativity is all her.  She has sold some already....she even has a Facebook Page lol.  If you want to check out her page you can click here.  I have been slacking on updating it with new pictures but she does take special orders :)

Stepping Out of my Comfort Zone

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen some recent tweets about my daughter belt testing.  Well she is officially a yellow belt!  I'm so proud of how hard she has been working at the Taekwondo academy she attends, well we attend.  Yes I have also been going to class with her.  Anyone who knows me knows that this is way out side of my comfort zone, but after getting over the initial nervouseness and embarassment at my lack of skill (its improving :) the class is so much fun and a great workout.  This is not some rinky dink park district class let by some College student, its a great school that really teaches respect, focus, etiquette as well as taekwondo technique.  The Grand Master, founder of the school, has quite an impressive resume. 

"Grand Master Bill Byung Cho is Founder and President of the United States Martial Arts TaeKwonDo Federation, President of the Illinois TaeKwonDo Association, and a licensed 6th Degree Black Belt Grand Master through the United States TaeKwonDo Union and World TaeKwonDo Federation headquartered in Seoul, Korea.   In addition to his competition and training at the Olympic Training Center and multiple recipient of MVP & Tournament Champion a the Korean American Games, he has served as Coach at the World Cup Games in Vietnam & Tokyo (2001 & 2002), the 2007 Head of Team for all Korean-American Olympic Athletes, and has hosted the largest tournaments in the Midwest.   Grand Master Cho is the USTF (United States TaeKwonDo Federation under Kukkiwon and the World TaeKwonDo Federation) State President, and is also the KAMA regional president.  Grand Master Cho is a leader, teacher, master, champion and mentor for more than 1,000 families and students."

Sweet Summertime (and Giveaway of Course!)

I cannot believe we are well into June already, summer is here and we are spending as much of it outdoors as we can.  Spring soccer just ended, softball is still going on, and football will be starting in July, on top of that we have been gardening and swimming.  Spending so much time in the sun is great but I have to make sure we are being smart and using sunscreen.  My daughter's skin is very sensitive to products so I have to find sunscreen that will be easy on her skin.  I recently tried the Beyond Coastal Active Face Stick (SPF 30) on her, and really thought the product was great.  Beyond Coastal is a company that makes sunscreens and sun care products that use clean ingredients that nourish and protect your skin.  The face stick looks much like a deodorant, you just pop off the top, roll it up and apply to the face.  It smells great.  She thought it was a little sticky at first so I just gently rubbed it in with my finger and she was good to go.  This face stick is made especially for high exposure areas and provides protection from UVA rays with Avobenzone. I also fell in love with their Citrus Grove lip balm, with SPF 15.   It is very soft and smooth, goes on clear, and smells amazing.  I'm sort of a lip balm addict, but I am very picky about what I use, and this lip balm was really great.

Vexations by Erik Satie, performed in tandem with cities around the world

• Chicago area percussionists perform Eric Satie’s Vexations simultaneously with players from other cities around the world. A live video feed will be connected to performances happening in Paris and New York City.

“Where in the World is Winston Choi and The Art of the Fugue?” Part 1

Site: Music Institute of Chicago, 1490 Chicago Ave., Evanston

• Concert pianist Winston Choi performs J.S. Bach's The Art of the Fugue complete over the course of the day at four different sites. This massive and rarely performed work takes over 90 minutes to play in its entirety. Choi begins at the Music Institute of Chicago in Evanston (this performance will be broadcast on 98.7WFMT) and progresses south to other piano host sites throughout the day.

“Peter and the Wolf” performed by Quintet Attacca

Site: Lincoln Park Zoo, Kovler Sea Lion Pool, Cannon Dr. and Fullerton Pkwy.

• Quintet Attacca presents a new version of "Peter and the Wolf," the beloved children's classic, at Lincoln Park Zoo’s Kovler Sea Lion Pool with narration by Mark George, president of the Music Institute of Chicago. A perfect event for the whole family, this performance takes place right after the seal feeding at 10:30 AM.

“Sousapalooza” and “Opera & Show Tunes Sing-Along”

• Two lunchtime events return from last year, the “Sousapalooza” from noon to 12:45 PM and an “Opera & Show Tunes Sing-Along” from 12:45 to 1:30 PM, both taking place in Daley Plaza. Richard Fischer, Director of Bands at Concordia University-Chicago, leads any and all eager “Sousapalooza” participants through some of the most beloved marches of John Philip Sousa (parts can be downloaded from www.makemusicchicago.com/participate/sousapalooza/), then opera and chorus fans will gather to sing beloved American musical favorites such as “Summertime” from Porgy & Bess, “I Could Have Danced All Night” from My Fair Lady, “Oklahoma” from Oklahoma, and many more.

Redmoon Theater’s “Celebration Vehicle”

• A dramatic coda to the day’s festivities, Redmoon Theater presents a spectacular performance of The Celebration Vehicle, a mobile opera-fire concert built onto a Mazda Rx-7 chassis and featuring a “fire organ,” DJ station, huge gramophone horn on a hydraulic lift, and an opera singer perched on an elevated platform. Synchronized to the musical stylings of a live DJ and an opera singer, the “fire organ” shoots columns of fire twenty feet into the air.
