The Truth About Paleo (Or Whatever Diet this is)

A couple of weeks ago my husband said he wanted to try this diet that his friend had a lot of success with, he said he wanted to cut out wheat and see if he could lose some weight.  I immediately jumped on the bandwagon because thanks to the holidays I have some extra meat on my bones.  I knew this would be super hard for me because I live on bread and pasta and I have a huge sweet tooth, but I thought I would give it a try.  So it started out as just cutting wheat and sugar but has turned into cutting out all grain and pre-packaged foods, more like the Paleo (Paleolithic, or Cave Man) diet.

Since it has been a little while, I think its safe to say I have learned some truths about this diet, so here goes.

1.  The first few days will be the worst of your life, period.
2.  The cravings go away after about day 5
3.  You will rarely go down about 50% of the food isles at your supermarket
4.  You will be cooking all the time (all the time)
5.  You will have a ton more dishes to do (due to all the cooking)
6.  Your kids may not be so easily persuaded to follow this diet.
7.  There is no way in hell I'm giving up cheese
8.  You will consume a whole lot of eggs, especially if baking something
9.  Your kids will look in the cabinets and say there is no food in this house....because you won't be buying pre-packaged food, it won't take up space in the cabinets
10.  People will doubt you
11.  You will doubt yourself
12.  You will cheat at least once
13.  Soon you will realize how much better you feel, how much more energy you have and just how good real, clean food is compared to boxed Mac N Cheese
14.  Best place for Paleo recipes is Pinterest
15.  You may start to see the number on the scale go down, or clothes fitting looser, or your midsection shrinking (hell to the yeah!)
16.  You will wonder why in the world it took you so long to try eating like this
17.  You will also realize that you are now paying less for groceries because its cheaper to buy ingredients and put meals together yourself
18.  You will succeed!

I walked through the bakery section at the store, where normally I would stop and grab some fresh baked french bread, rolls and sandwich bread.....and it felt so good to pass it all by.  I'm sure that I will have ups and downs with this new lifestyle but I am feeling pretty confident that I will stick with it,

Living with Glasses

People who wear glasses know that they can see the world a little bit differently from everyone else.  It is not only the fact that they feel lost without a pair of specs on, but that there are certain things that they do just a little bit differently. If you wear glasses you will easily identify with these universal truths, while for people with perfect vision, they may provide you with a glimpse of how the other half lives.

First in the morning and last at night:  While many people reach for their spouses first thing in the morning, people with imperfect vision reach for their glasses first, in order to see if their spouse is actually in bed. They are also the last thing we touch at night, some would say that that is a very romantic relationship indeed.

Steam things up:  These winter days, many people with glasses are temporarily blinded when entering a building from outside. The change in temperature steams up their glasses when they go from an outdoor environment to an indoor. This is why they may wander into the wrong room, or are desperately searching for a piece of cloth to wipe their glasses with.

Just like us:  With the invention of the contact lens it is often difficult to determine who needs glasses and who doesn’t. Today discount contact lenses can be easily ordered online and delivered to your door in a matter of days. Therefore, on days that its just not convenient to wear glasses many people opt for contact lenses. These are the days that the co worker and friends notice ”something different” about you, but yet no one can put their finger on it. Heck! Even Clark Kent could become Superman by simply taking off his glasses, so why not you.

Choose activities carefully:  When wearing glasses you sometimes have to be aware of the activities that you participate in. Many glasses wearer are very frustrated when they go see a 3 D movie and attempt to fit the theater glasses over their existing ones.  It doesn’t always lead to a very great impression on the first date. Activities such as swimming, skiing and some sports may not be ideal when you wear glasses so you often have to inquire ahead.

Napping is difficult:  Many of us have dozed off in a car or on a plane during a long trip. Napping is pretty wonderful, except when you fall asleep wearing glasses. Not only is it uncomfortable, and you wake up with a big indent on your face, but also you can spend much time searching for your glasses after a nap, only to discover them tangled in your hair. It is not a great look, especially in public.
There are many things that are just a little bit different for you if you wear glasses. Thankfully, these days a lot of the population does, so you are not alone.  Embrace these quirks and look at life through rose colored lenses.

Crummy Weather Means Girls Night In #SharetheSoft #CBias #SocialFabric

We have had freezing rain falling all day long, the roads are icy and we really can't go anywhere.  It's a good thing I went to Walmart yesterday and stocked up on food and supplies so that today, while the boys play, my daughter and I can have a girls night in.  She has had a sore throat and been complaining of not feeling well and I'm hoping it will pass soon and she doesn't come down with anything serious.  While shopping yesterday, I had to buy some Kleenex and you would not believe how empty the shelves in the paper goods isle were.
Especially the Kleenex section, you can tell its flu season for sure.  I also noticed that they put the cough drops right there next to the Kleenex which I think is quite convenient.  We always buy Kleenex brand, maybe because that is the brand we used as kids and it stuck?  I like how soft they are and my kids refuse to use any other tissues.
I found this pack of Kleenex with an offer from Vudu.com for a free $4 movie credit.  It was the last pack with this offer so I snached it up, its a good thing I did because it sure came in handy today.
I also grabbed some of these for my daughter's sore throat, these helped her this morning so I'm glad I picked them up.

The Vudu.com offer on the Kleenex box was really simple to redeem, the directions were right on the back of the sticker.
I covered up my redemption code, but there are the directions with a code that you enter by visiting  walmart.com/kleenex.
You just follow the simple directions, if you have an account you log in, if you don't it prompts you to create one by coming up with a user name and password and entering your email address and mailing address.  You do not enter any credit card information.
Then you get prompted to choose a movie, and they have a huge selection.  I wanted something age appropriate for my daughter and something girly that we would enjoy.
We ended up picking The Odd Life of Timothy Green.  I guess you can watch through your Playstation but we just set they laptop on the arm of the couch and watched right on there.
But before the movie started, we tried out a new brownie recipe that follows the diet we are trying. As you can see it must have been a success!
Here is my little lady laying on my lap.  We both put our pajamas on so we could just lay around and enjoy the show.

You can check out my shopping trip and more photos by visiting my Google+ album Here.

The Gardner School is Coming to Chicago!‏

When our kids are young they are like little sponges, absorbing all sorts of information and learning at lightning speed.  Those first 5 years of life are crucial for learning all sorts of skills that will help children succeed in school.  More and more parents are realizing this and taking the time to choose the right preschool with the right program for their children.  I really enjoy living in a small town with a rural setting but a big downfall to that is a lack of options for preschool.  I'm sure some of you read my posts a while ago when I was struggling to find a school for my son.  I guess I got spoiled when my daughter was little and we put her in a private preschool where she excelled, and I wanted the same for my son.  Those of you closer to Warrenville or Chicago will soon get an opportunity to give your children a pre-school education that is above and beyond excellent.  The Gardner School is opening their doors in Warrenville in February and in the West Loop (West Madison Street) in March.

If you have not heard of this school before, you really need to take a tour, The Gardner School caters to each child's learning needs while surrounding them with a rich learning environment.  The lessons have a  multi-sensory approach so no matter how your child learns best, they are guaranteed to absorb what they are learning.  Children are able to go back and revisit activities that they have previously done so that they can really learn and master the skills for that activity.  Children at The Gardner learn through identifying patterns, focus, practice and reflection, all very important parts to good learning.  They have programs like Handwriting Without Tears which teaches kids fluent and legible handwriting through a multi-sensory approach.  They also have a great math program as well as one specially geared towards toddlers.

The Gardner School offers both full and part-time child care year-round for children as young as six weeks.  They offer a summer camp and enrichment classes such as gymnastics, dance and foreign language.  All of their lead teachers are well qualified with four year degrees in early childhood education and elementary education, and they are dedicated to providing your kids with a stimulating and creative learning experience.

I really wish we had one of these schools closer to where I am.  My son is very smart and taught himself how to read, but I wish he was part of this multi-sensory learning curriculum.  If you would like more information about The Gardner School or their programs, or are ready to enroll your child, you can visit their website by clicking here.

Reclaim Your Time By Streaming TV

It seems like everyone is always running out of time to keep up with life’s daily activities. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to accomplish all that we need to do and still carve out a little bit of it for ourselves. Family TV nights or watching the newest DVD release all seem like the thing of the past. Luckily, these days many families are discovering movie and television streaming services such as those available on Rogers which allow them to take back control of their entertainment.

Streaming services have revolutionised the way we watch TV. We are no longer bound to the show’s original airing time, which often coincided with life’s activities or another show that we followed. These days you no longer have to choose between shows A and show B, as they will both be available whenever you are ready for them. Since television shows are often featured for several weeks, even if you have missed an episode, you can easily watch a few episodes in a row, and who knows, maybe even plan a little television marathon while you are at it.

The greatest thing about streaming video is that we are no longer limited to television viewing from our couch. You can access Rogers online on your laptop as well. This is great if you want to follow the recipe along with the famous television chef who instructs it, watch a show while you are working out, or even follow along with your favourite film as you lay in bed. This is especially wonderful when you have a much dreaded task ahead, such as laundry. Time just seems to fly by if you have something to occupy your mind as your hands do the hard work.

In the very recent past many families would make it a tradition to go to the local video store on the weekend. You would have to hope that the movie that you wanted was available, but you would also have to remember to return in before its due date. Many of us have had the mad dash to the video store, often in our pyjamas when we forget to return the movie on time. With streaming services you can easily access movies, including new release, with your remote without ever going out into the cold. You usually have the movie for the standard rental period of two days, during which time you can watch it as many times as you would like. At the end of the two days the movie returns itself so you no longer have to bag on the store door hoping that you let you in before closing. Streaming is just like watching a DVD the quality is excellent and you can even pause and restart.

Do not be a slave to your TV, you can now watch television and movies at your convenience, without any of the added hassle. By doing so you can reclaim some much needed me time.

New Year's Resolution with a Skin Twist‏ {Giveaway} @EucerinUS #SkinFirst

One of the biggest things that I am changing this year is the way I eat.  Did you know that the foods you eat, amount you sleep and level of exercise activity all have an impact on your skin? Here are some tips to get your skin’s metabolism moving in the New Year:

Swap your white bread with whole grain options to help support healthy looking skin. Whole grains help make skin firming collagen and elastin!

Make sure to add Vitamin C rich foods, like broccoli and citrus fruits, to your shopping list in 2013. Vitamin C can help your skin neutralize free radicals.

Exercising can do more than trim your waistline; it’s also good for your skin. Increased blood flow from physical activity helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells

Many people vow to eat healthier in the New Year, but doing so can also help impact your skin. What do carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash have in common? All are high in Beta-Carotene, which promotes cell turnover and growth while protecting the collagen in your skin.

Rest up!  When you sleep, you allow your skin cells a chance to regenerate.   Do you get 6-8 hours of sleep each night?

Like I mentioned above, I am changing my eating habits but also have some other resolutions, like to go back to my gym regiment, get more organized, focus more on school and stop staying up so late.

If you are ready to make some skin healthy changes, get started by checking out the  Skindicator App on Eucerin's Facebook page to get a personalized skin care recommendation from Eucerin Skin First Dermatologists.

One of my fabulous readers will win an awesome Eucerin prize which will include products that were recommended to them by the Skindicator App as well as a $100 Visa Gift Card.  All you have to do is follow the directions on the Rafflecopter widget below.

Mia Mariu Mineral Cosmetic Review & Giveaway

When I look for makeup I look for very specific qualities.  I want make up that looks natural, matches my complexion, and is easy on my skin.  The worst feeling is when you put on makeup and it feels thick and heavy and causes you to break out.

Mia Mariu is has a line of mineral make up that is perfect for every complexion, so there is no more mixing shades to match your skin.  Their make up is perfect for people rosacea and other skin pigment issues.  Mia Mariu offers luxurious, light-weight and long lasting powders and creams that match perfectly with your skin tone and give you great coverage.  The minerals are infused with vitamins and anti-oxidants to protect your skin.

I got a chance to review several products from this line, including the loose mineral shadow liner.  I use this every day and love how light it feels.  The shadow looks natural and beautiful, with a little shimmer.  I like my shadows in nice neutral tones so I chose Caramelo and Mora, both were perfect and went well with my brown eyes.  If you are used to packed eye shadows and still use the little q-tip looking applicator, you really have to try loose shadow and a good shadow brush, they make a world of difference.

I also got a chance to try out the Illuminating Magic Satin which is the final touch for your makeup.  It gives your skin a nice glow and just a little bit of shimmer.  It is made with oats and Shea Butter and can be used on cheek bones, as an eye shadow base and over your lips.

GIVEAWAY:
One of my winners will get to try out some of these great products for themselves, all you have to do to enter is follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter widget below.

Tales from the Coop: My Problem Child

I have written several times about one particular chicken in my backyard flock that always seems to be giving me trouble.  I named her Renegade ( click here for one story)  and she was always quite the adventurer and escape artist.
Well she is at it again but this time its her health.  Yesterday I went in the coop to feed the girls and noticed that she was limping, or sort of falling over.  Her eyes were closing and she was shivering or trembling.  I thought that she may have broken a wing or leg jumping down from her roost, but after watching her a while I saw that was not the case.  She could stand, but she did not want to.  She was sort of sitting and laying there.  I picked her up to take her in the house and noticed that she had no feather on her underside.  I think its too late for molting and there is no sign of mites or anything, and she was not broody, so I have no idea why she is missing feathers.  Although I keep a heat lamp in the coop, I noticed some traces of frostbite on her comb, so instantly I thought that maybe her underside was frostbit too.
So this was her yesterday, just laying there shaking.  She did drink some water but did not eat much.

I kept her in a box in my basement but really had little hope.  This morning I went to check on her and she was standing.  I picked up the water dish and she drank water and was even making some little chicken noises quietly.

She is still not well but she is doing better.  I was trying to give her some protein today, even gave her hard boiled eggs (ironic isn't it) but she is still eating very little.  I read that feathers take up to 9 weeks to regrow and I have no idea if she is frost bit or not.  Her skin is really red but there is no infection or anything.  I also read that feeding her more protein may speed up the feather re-growing process.  Hopefully she will be feeling well enough to go back to the coop soon, and if any of you have any experience with something like this, please let me know what's going on.

Dance the Night Away with Just Dance Disney Party #JDDisney #spon

Thank you to Ubisoft for sponsoring this post. Please click here to learn more about Ubisoft. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. #UbiChamps
What do you do when you are stuck inside all winter break because its too cold to play outside?  Have a family game night and dance the night away with Just Dance Disney Party!  This family friendly game is available for Xbox and Wii and features 25 of Disney's most popular songs.  We cranked up the volume and played guys vs. girls (guess who won?).

All my favorite songs are on this game, everything from "Following the Leader" from Peter Pan, to "Under the Sea" from Little Mermaid, to "Small World".  This game is for up to 4 players and your goal is to get the highest team score.  I loved playing this with my kids because these are songs that they recognize, know the words to and I know are age appropriate.

This game allows you to set up a playlist of all of your favorite songs for non-stop dancing, it also has the words on the bottom of the screen so you can sing along too.

You can purchase this game for only $19.99 on Amazon (also available at Toys R Us)

Win a $25 Gift Certificate to eDiaperCakes.com

I have always loved the cute little diaper cakes that people give to loved ones at baby showers, but I honestly do not have the time to create one of these.  I was excited to learn that I could order one of these cute little creations from eDiaperCakes.com.

eDiaperCakes.com is a mom owned business that started last year. They make elegant diaper cakes out of popular children’s books, rattles, flowers and plush animals. Everything they make is assembled by hand and they only use brand name products to make their baby cakes. Each cake has a general theme and it’s embellished with 4-6 different baby products.

Diaper cakes are the perfect gift for any occasion and they will be the talk of the party if you bring one to a shower.  This is the kind of gift that will actually be useful to the new parent.

eDiaperCakes.com would like to give one of my readers a $25 gift certificate to use towards a purchase (including sale items).  If you would like a chance to win, leave me a comment below with your email address.  I will be choosing a winner on 1/6.
