Allstate Foundation Drive it Home Program #DriveitHome #CGC

Last week I got a chance to attend an Allstate Drive it Home show, part of the Drive it Home program, with my 15 year old brother who just got his learning permit.  I know teens don't always want to listen to advice but that does not mean we should stop giving it to them, especially when it comes to something like driving.  It took a little convincing to get my brother to agree to come with me since its not cool to hang out with your older sister and mom, but I think he really enjoyed the presentation.  I thought it was great, there was a good mix of entertainment, facts as well as personal experiences.  The show was not dull and boring and I think it really was a great way to present parents and teens with some very important information.

We learned a lot about the dangers of distracted driving but also that the number one cause of teenage car accidents is just due to not enough experience behind the wheel.  Here are some interesting facts for the state of Illinois:
  • Parents believe that risk-taking is the primary cause of crashes, when inexperience is the real issue. Only 17% of Illinois parents say a teen’s lack of driving experience is the top cause of crashes. That’s slightly lower than the national average of 18%.
  •  Parents say it’s very important for their teen to learn a variety of skills behind the wheel, but aren’t teaching their teen to manage the highest risk driving situations. Nearly 29% of Illinois parents are not covering how to manage the deadly risks – such as nighttime driving and driving with young passengers – with their teens. Oddly enough, parents and teens agree that they should have spent more time practicing in dangerous conditions, according to The Allstate Foundation survey.
  • One of the most dangerous years in a person’s life is the first 12 months after getting a driver’s license. Annually, there are about two million teens under the age of 18 in their first year of driving on U.S. roads, the National Safety Council (NSC) reports.
As part of the Drive it Home program, the Drive it Home Show is on the road right now and stopping in 14 cities nation wide, to give parents and teens a fun look at the serious subject of teen driving. Why is it fun? Because the show features comedians from Second City Communications, but also safety experts that will explain the real hazards that their teens face on the road.

The show is not the only part of this program, you can visit driveithome.org for more lifesaving recommendations and resources such as encouraging parents to spend at least 30 minutes a week driving with their newly licensed teen, in many different situations such as rain and snow. Also at driveithome.org, parents can sign up to receive weekly driving practice tips and suggestions via e-mail, and print, discuss and sign a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement.

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective, and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry Provides Free Brain Games {Ticket Giveaway} #MSIsummerbrain

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

Science has always been one of my favorite subjects in school.  I love doing experiments and seeing results firsthand, and luckily my children also have the same interest in science.  I am always looking for fun science things to do with my kids, especially now that summer is here and they are losing much of what they learned over the school year.  Research shows that kids can lose as much as three months worth of learning over the summer, something known as "summer brain drain".  The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is offering up a fun and free online science program called Summer Brain Games that will keep kids learning this summer and prevent the “summer brain drain.”
What are Summer Brain Games?

Summer Brain Games is 8 weeks of fun and FREE at home science experiments that use items that you already have around the house.  There is a free online activity guide which features weekly experiments which use fun summer themes like gardening, sunlight and sprinklers.  Go to msichicago.org/summerbrain now to register for the Summer Brain Games and download your FREE Summer Brain Games kit.  Everyone who registers will also receive a free pass to the Museum of Science and Industry.

We have had quite a few stormy days so far this summer and the Summer Brain Games have given my kids something to do.  I actually have not heard them say "I'm bored" in a while.  Younger kids will need some parental help with some of the projects, but if you have older kids have them help your younger ones.  My almost 10 year old is a great helper to my 6 year old.

The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is offering a fun and free online science program called Summer Brain Games. The eight-week program lasts from June 17, 2013-August 12, 2013 and features a weekly experiment or science challenge that can easily be performed at home with kids of all ages. Visit msichicago.org/summerbrain now to register for Summer Brain Games and download your free Summer Brain Games kit. As an added bonus, registering automatically gets you a pass to come to the Museum for free this summer.

I am really excited to give my readers a chance to win a four pack of tickets to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, a value of  $76.  All you have to do to enter is follow the instructions on the rafflecopter widget below:

Teaching Your Children the Importance of #Volunteering

Over the years we have done several charity projects with the kids.  We have done food drives with the Girl Scout troop, donated items to an animal shelter as well as Christmas toys to an organization that helps the less fortunate.  I wanted them to do more though, I wanted them to know how good it feels to do some physical work to help others.  The opportunity actually arose just last weekend.  Our Taekwondo school is very involved in the community and they had signed up with United Way to help out with their Day of Caring project.

It was a hot day and we were assigned to pull weeds at a rain garden at a women's center.  Our group had lots of little ones so I was curious to see how long they would last in the hot sun.  The weeds were taller than the kids but they jumped right in and got to work.

My little guy got tired first.  He took quite a few breaks but somehow made it to the end of our scheduled shift.  My daughter had fun the whole time, her friends from Taekwondo were there and it made the work go by faster.

I actually forgot to take an after pic of the garden, there was still a lot of work to be done there but we put a big dent in it.  It was great to see the kids working as a team.  Overall it was a great experience and something that we will do again, I encourage you to check out family volunteer opportunities in your area.

Your Child CAN Learn a Foreign Language { #Giveaway }

Disclosure:   This post is sponsored by Language Stars, but all opinions are my own

Being someone who speaks a foreign language, I have always wanted my children to be bilingual as well.  I have tried to teach them a little here and there but since my husband is not bilingual, and they don't hear it everyday, what little they learn they quickly forget.  It is hard for me to come up with fun ways for them to learn and retain what they have learned.  I was really excited to learn about Language Stars and their play-driven foreign language classes for kids.  The classes are specifically designed for kids ages 1 to 10 and use a high energy FunImmersion method.  Kids learn the language through fun games, art projects, music and so much more, and the best part is that there are 14 locations in the Chicago area.

Right now Language Stars is offering summer programs where your child will be immersed in not only the foreign language that they are learning but also in the culture of the country.  You can choose programs in Spanish, French, Mandarin, Italian and German, which are all taught by native-speaking teachers from around the world.  Language Stars programs are second to none, with a curriculum all their own developed over 14 years, and max class size of 8 students, ensuring that all children get the most out of each class. I love this idea not only for its benefit of teaching a foreign language but also because it shows children how different and wonderful other cultures are.  It makes them aware of the beauty of the world.

If your summer is already jam packed full of activities and you are interested in the 2013/2014 academic year, you can actually enroll in a free trial class.  That is the best way to find out for yourself if Language Stars is what you have been looking for.  If you would like the free trial class, click HERE to get started, or call 866-557-8277.

There are several locations to chose from:
Arlington Heights                               Crystal Lake
Barrington                                         Geneva/St.Charles
Deerfield/Lake Forest                        Homewood/Flossmoor
Hinsdale/Oak Brook                          Hyde Park
Lincoln Park - Chicago                      Orland Park/ Palos Park
Naperville                                          Park Ridge
Wilmette/Evanston                             Wheaton
I am also excited to let you know that I am hosting a sweepstakes for $500 toward a Language Stars All-Year Program, and of course everyone that enters automatically gets one free class (must be a new family to the center).

Breakfast Bread Bowls Perfect for Quick Delicious Meal

I am a member of the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community.  This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias and their client.

You would think that now since it is summer my schedule would slow down a little, but its the complete opposite, it shifted into high gear.  With all their sports and play dates, add to that all my chores and activities and we have a busy schedule.  I am always looking for quick and easy meals to make the kids, especially for breakfast since they seem to be tired of cereal.

We went to the store yesterday and I was curious to see what I would find in the freezer section other than frozen waffles.  I was specifically looking for something with protein and that would fill them up and give them energy until lunch time.  I found these Breakfast Bread Bowls from Tyson that looked really good.

They were kind of tucked away between many other products, but they look really yummy.  There were two different kinds, ones with egg, bacon and cheese and ones with sausage, egg and cheese.  We got the bacon ones to try for breakfast today.

We will be spending the morning volunteering for United Way, along with some others from our TaeKwonDo school.  I heard we will be pulling weeds from a garden for the needy, so we will need a good hearty breakfast so that we can work until lunch.

These breakfast bread bowls come two in a pack and the recommended heating instructions are to heat them in the microwave.  For 1 bowl you heat for 55 seconds and for 2 bowls for a minute and 45 seconds.  I think that my daughter could probably eat two of these, based on their size.

You can pair these bread bowls with fresh fruit and orange juice for a complete breakfast.  And the verdict is that she loved them!

To see my whole shop you can visit my Google + album by clicking HERE.

If you are a college student or are planning to start this fall, you probably know the high cost of furthering your education.  Tuition is expensive, but if you think the costs stop there, you are in for a rude awakening when you walk into your college bookstore.  Last semester one of my books was priced at almost $200 used, yes USED.  That kind of money just is not in my budget, I had to look for other options.  I found out that renting my books could save me anywhere between 40-90% off of bookstore prices.  CampusBookRentals.com was a great place to look for the textbooks that I needed.  They offer flexible renting periods and free shipping and their prices were so much better than what I saw at the bookstore.  Another perk of renting with them is that you can highlight in the books.  This is great for people like me who would rather highlight than take notes.  Before I learned about renting texbooks I was in a panic, I had no idea how I would come up with enough money to buy books for all my classes in a short amount of time, thankfully CampusBookRentals.com was there with a reasonable solution.

If you have already purchsed books, or have books from previous semesters and you have thought about selling them back to the bookstore, consider CampusBookRentals new program called Rent Back.  Rent Back allows students to rent out the textbooks that they own, this option would make you two to four times more money than the buyback option.

Another thing that sets CampusBookRentals apart from other book renting sites is that with every book rented they donate to Operation Smile, a wonderful organization that provides free surgery for children with cleft lip and cleft palate.  They work in over 60 countries worldwide and raise awareness about this life threatening issue but also give lasting results.

If you don't have your books yet for next semester, check out CampusBookRentals.com, I'm sure you will save money by renting!

After hitting some balls, go get some lunch and stay for the game.  If you have ever wanted to meet the entire coaching staff, you could win that too.  Watch batting practice and of course the game.
